He could stay this way, Jack thought. He could stay there for a while, just with her. He could feel young beside her, remembering how they used to be. It was so long ago now, but not for her, just years for her and it seemed within reach.
It wasn't, of course. He knew that really. He knew too that Rose would go home and again he wouldn't see her. But for now, just now, he could pretend. And he'd allow himself that.
She questioned though, and a little of that shine faded from his eyes. It was the weight of the truth and how would he deliver that? He did his best to cover any difference that might show, a wider smile and a gentle laugh, and he hoped that was enough.
"What, you think I'm gonna let some Dalek see me off?" he smiled and shook his head. "No chance." But then that was no explanation at all, so he dropped his head slightly, thought a moment and lifted again.
"Guess you could say I've had some modifications since I last saw you." He shook his head. "I can't die, Rose. Not ever."
