Follows this.
Smack.
Jack landed on the marbled floor with an unceremonious fall.
"Yeah, but you missed it," he said finishing the sentiment the Doctor started before he activated the manipulator.
He pulled himself up from the floor and stretched himself out, looking over to the Doctor to make sure he was okay and all in one piece.
"We're about 800 years to the left," he said as he checked his wrist strap. "Set it on random, thought it'd be more fun that way."
He grinned over at him, and stretched his neck out a little more as he looked around.
What he saw, was nothing short of spectacular.
The walls looked to be made of stone and were decorated with gargoyles and elaborate gold filigree flourishes. Ahead of them, up on the wall, was a vast round glass stain window. Small lights illuminated it around the circle, but just about visible through the other side was the vague starlight in the distance. They were still in space, not on a planet surface.
"Well this is new... what is this, some sort of space monastery?"

Date: 2010-01-06 08:58 am (UTC)"I'd never forget," he said. "If I could have my memories now, I would. But I can't. There's no way."

Date: 2010-01-06 09:04 am (UTC)"Oh never say never, Doctor," Jack said, attempting optimism. "Never know what's around the corner. Lets just hope we get on this time around, right?" He laughed slightly, but it was one of those laughs that if you listened past the surface it could easily be a sob.
He glanced back at the manipulator and nodded, "How's that coming?"

Date: 2010-01-06 08:38 pm (UTC)He looked down the hall, feeling a wave of sickness as he tried to remember which room was Jack's. No. No, if he remembered, then it might cease to be Jack's room, because the timeline would compensate. He shook his head and turned back.
"Which one's yours? I'll wake you when we land."

Date: 2010-01-06 08:49 pm (UTC)He followed the Doctor's gaze and concentrated to remember. His room, where was that? It tired him to remember.
"It moved," he said with a frown, "recently, I think. It's... just up the stairs. Three along. Yeah, pretty sure that's right. Guess I'll find out soon enough."
He stepped along the corridor and paused, turning back to the Doctor, "If anything happens, if you need a hand, just knock."

Date: 2010-01-06 08:58 pm (UTC)He would need to sleep soon, but not just yet. Not until he was certain they were away and safe.
He turned back to the console room. The TARDIS's silence worried him even more, now. She was never this quiet for so long.

Date: 2010-01-06 09:10 pm (UTC)He turned and walked and he didn't look back. Just find the room, go to bed and go to sleep. That was his rather naive plan. His mind felt taxed enough to make him tired, so maybe he could sleep. Maybe that would work.
On the way to the room he lost his way. The first door he opened turned out to be a cupboard, the second was locked and only on the third attempt did he actually find the bedroom.
It was shocking to walk into the room. He could be under no doubt that it was his. It was styled like he might style it, with shirts laid out that just had to be his. Were he in any doubt that the memories in his mind were real then seeing the room sealed the deal.
He tried to sleep, he really did. He lay down and he was tired. He managed to drift, but then in that state his mind drifted too. His mind found the truth easier than the lie, and if he didn't know it was real he would think it nothing more than a dream, but it wasn't, it was real. It was snippets of reality that he never knew existed.
The sleep didn't last long.
When he woke he redressed in clean clothes and exited the room. Maybe he could help, do something else somewhere. It felt better than sleeping and remembering.
He made his way to the console room and called out when he got there, "Doctor are you her--" but he stalled and panicked as he saw the lifeless form of the Doctor lying on the floor.
He ran to him and moved down to his side. Put a hand to his forehead. Cold. He had to remind himself that that was normal.
"Doctor! Doctor are you okay?"

Date: 2010-01-06 09:19 pm (UTC)He was standing on a snow-covered hill, looking out over a city. Spires and psychic railways and people, all bustling about and living. Jack was down there, he could see him, flickering in and out of the skyline.
"Your song is ending soon," a calm voice told him. Ood Sigma, he must've been back on the Ood Sphere. He kept his eyes on Jack, on what little he could see (remember) of him. Snow was moving around them, but he couldn't feel it. He couldn't feel anything.
"Events have occurred and are occurring and without the timeline intact, the universe will end."
"What do you mean?" he asked. "It's just one piece of the timeline."
"The end of time."
The Doctor turned to face Ood Sigma, but the Ood's eyes were bright, glowing red, and he roared as the Doctor turned, foam spewing from his tentacles.
The Doctor's eyes snapped open. He was laying on the floor of the console room, a warm hand against his forehead.
"Ow. I think I hit my head on the way down."

Date: 2010-01-06 09:25 pm (UTC)"You okay?" he said as the Doctor's eyes opened. He reached his arm down to hook around his back and support him to sitting up.
"You were out cold, had me worried for a minute there. What happened?"
no subject
Date: 2010-01-06 09:30 pm (UTC)"Oh, nothing to worry about," he said. "Just got a bit overtired. I don't sleep like you lot do, I just tend to keep going until I stop." It was always something that worried his companions the first few times it happened, but eventually became more of an annoyance than anything else. After all, who would want to have their compatriot go to sleep halfway through a conversation once a week or so?
"Sorry about that." He reached a hand up and struggled to his feet.

Date: 2010-01-06 09:36 pm (UTC)"Yeah well just be careful," he said with an attempt to sound slightly chiding.
He took tight hold of his hand and helped the Doctor up.
"It's only been a few hours," he told him, "I don't sleep much myself. Especially not now." He paused though and frowned slightly as he looked at the Doctor.
"You okay, you look kinda pale."

Date: 2010-01-06 09:43 pm (UTC)"Dreamt about the Ood."
Something was nagging in the back of his mind. He'd been running from the Ood for so long, he'd almost forgotten just how powerful they could be. Powerful enough to call him, powerful enough to send dreams to him.
A ready-made psychic army.
"I think I've figured out how to reset the timelines."
no subject
Date: 2010-01-06 09:49 pm (UTC)He didn't know a great deal about them, past what he'd seen and been told. They'd always gone under his radar as being unimportant.
"What?" he all but snapped. He didn't mean to be so sharp, but if it could be fixed...
"Well good! Great! What is it? Lets get to it!"
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 02:38 am (UTC)He said the last sentence as casually as he could, but there was nothing casual about it. When he visited the Ood, his song would end. He wasn't in a hurry for that to happen. He loved being himself. Loved everything about it, save the bad skin and the need for reading glasses.
But what would be the point in living a half-life with chunks of time missing from himself and the universe?
"We'll need to land elsewhere, first. Make sure the Marquis has caught up with us."
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 02:45 am (UTC)There had to be more to it than getting the Ood to reset their memories, Jack was sure of that, but still the prospect of it being a possibility was a positive one.
"Okay," he said, looking back to the console. "So lets go somewhere. Somewhere quiet, nothing too taxing. Hopefully nobody dying. No need for heroics, that sort of thing. We get him chasing us and then we get off to the Ood."

Date: 2010-01-07 05:01 am (UTC)"How about Earth?" he offered. "Mid-20th century? Something peaceful and relaxed."
Not that he was really fond of peaceful and relaxed, but he did understand the appeal. It wouldn't be a bad idea right now.
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 05:09 am (UTC)"Right," he said, tapping both hands against the console, "we can do Earth if you want to do Earth. Just do me a favour, no London and no Cardiff. Trust me, that wouldn't be a good idea for me."
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 05:29 am (UTC)He punched in a few coordinates on the TARDIS and gave Jack a grin. "Late 70's, maybe? For some reason, I think you'd do quite well in the 70's."
Or the 60's. He had a faint, strange thought that Jack would be quite at home in Woodstock, but if he dwelled on it, his head began to ache.
"Sound like a plan?"
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 05:37 am (UTC)Jack had a feeling that the Doctor would be the sort of man oblivious enough for that to go right over his head. Or at least he hoped so.
His smirk turned into a grin though, and he crossed his arms over his chest as he looked at him. "Hey I did well in every era. --Particularly well in the 30s and 40s actually, hence the look-- But oh you should have seen me in my flares and platform boots. You'd have loved it." He shot him a cheeky wink and nodded down at the console.
"Do the honours, Doctor."
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 05:44 am (UTC)He pulled a lever and set the TARDIS into motion. He grinned madly at the column, and tried to reach in, feel the TARDIS's joy at movement. Nothing was there. It was like she was numb, or scared.
"So how long have you been on Earth? Sat through the 30's and the 40's, but you're speaking in 51st century dialect. Are you really that old?" Because, to the Doctor, that was really quite impressive.
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 05:52 am (UTC)"Not so bad with the hair now," he said, glancing his eyes up to the top of the Doctor's head and shooting him another grin.
He held tight as the TARDIS moved, and though he wasn't familiar with it, it seemed his body was. Muscle memory that knew exactly how to hold on and keep himself stable.
"Depends how you count it," Jack told him. "Years alive? I'm 177. I was trapped on Earth when I was 35, been there ever since. That's not counting the fact I've been buried underground for 2000 years, so you know... I've been around."
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 06:01 am (UTC)"Not bad for 177," he commented with a quick glance in Jack's direction. Not that Jack was his type at all. Not that the Doctor really had a type anymore. "But I'm a Time Lord, so I've been around the block a few times myself."
He grabbed the parking brake and pulled, sending the TARDIS into landing. Once the column calmed, he grinned madly. "Though I'm pretty sure I did it in a nicer vehicle than you."
no subject
Date: 2010-01-07 06:07 am (UTC)He grinned privately to himself again before straightening up. "Oh I'm sure you have," he said, looking him up and down teasingly.
As they landed, he gripped tightly onto the console and dusted down the front of his great coat. "Now, now," he laughed. He could easily say something back but then as he looked up he thought he TARDIS, well, she really was pretty magnificent, wasn't she?
"Trust me, however I did it, I did it in style."
With another grin in his direction, he turned towards the door and nodded. "You want to do the honours?"
He loved this bit. He remembered that.
