He turned his head to look at Reinette, and catch her gaze in his. But he didn't expect what came next, and so the confusion for the scenario, if not written across his face, was most definitely visible in his eyes.
There was a facade to maintain. Not a lie, but the facade he always displayed to those who expected something from the Captain. And as such, he didn't make his confusion known.
Instead, he turned towards her and he bowed his head as though it were planned.
But as he moved down, and his ear was nearer hers, he whispered, his voice laced with confusion.
