"I escaped," he confirmed. "I was somewhere else. Guess they hadn't bargained for me. I got to your rooms but he was already there. Reinette he saw me at the ball. He saw me without a mask. This goes back years."
He struggled through his coughing, and though certain urges wanted him to lean to her, they were distant and old, and he attempted to huddle from the touch that was sore to his skin.
"The day you're supposed to die," he corrected, "things change, time changes. Don't let it. Not because of me."
And he found himself on that, wanting to tell her he never intended to go, that he never would have, but all he could do then was cough and feel it through his bones.
"I need you to kill me," he said, barely spoken at all. "It'll help. Please."
