It was not precisely the reaction she had anticipated. At least in the few moments after the kiss that she had allowed herself to consider anything of the sort. Certainly his response had not been any part of her initial decision. It had been not that thought through. Far from it.

Yet it was far from it.

Perhaps in was the unexpected sight of Jack's smile, and Reinette returned one one kind. It felt strange, but for once she did not allow herself to dwell on how she must be wearing it.
