The full meaning of Jack's words settled over her, as Reinette fully considered just how deep Louis' resentment ran. He had stood as her dearest friend. And now she could not even think of him without anger.

As the coughing passed and she pulled slightly back, Reinette could not hide the small intake of breath at the sight of the angry, infected welts that criss crossed Jack's skin. She did not even know wear to begin that would not cause impossible pain.

"Things have changed, Jack," she said softly. "Because of you. Because of who you are and the time we spent together. I am not willing to trade that for something as small as safety. What is ever to be found there?"

Reinette paled visibly at Jack's last request. She composed herself to sit back far enough to meet his gaze. To kill him?

"I have your wrist strap," she offered, reaching. "It could take you somewhere. Anywhere they might help you. You do nit have to die, surely."
